Allergic Eye Disease
4 Day Pollen Count Forecast: www.pollen.com/allergy-forecast.asp?PostalCode=92653&Logon=Enter Allergic conjunctivitis is the irritation of the conjunctiva (eyeball covering) as a reaction to a sensitizing or allergic substance. The condition, also known as allergy eyes, causes one's eyes and lids to become red, swollen, and itchy. Untreated allergy eyes may cause someone to frequently rub their eyes, which could lead to more serious damage. The optimal allergic conjunctivitis treatment involves complete avoidance of the allergens that trigger allergic reactions. In some cases, depending on the substances a person is susceptible to, this can be achieved. For instance, if a person were allergic only to cat hair and dander, allergic conjunctivitis treatment would simply require the avoidance of cats. However, this is typically not the case. The majority of people that suffer from allergy eyes are susceptible to many substances which they have little or no control over. For example, those who suffer from seasonal allergies are often vulnerable to pollen and mold. These two allergens are found throughout the environment and cannot be eliminated. Therefore, the optimal allergic conjunctivitis treatment - allergen avoidance - is not sensible or realistic. Other solutions must be considered. I suggest the use of cold compresses or artificial tears as temporary allergic conjunctivitis treatments to wash away allergens from the surface of the eye. As noted, however, this is only a temporary solution that provides short-term relief. For other situations, over-the-counter eye drops are recommended. However, the continued use of some of these products can make eyes more red, and frequent dosing is not compatible with contact lens use. The best solution is specific prescription medications which provide the needed relief, prevent ocular damage, and permit continued contact lens use. If you are having allergy issues please call to schedule an appointment. There is really no need to suffer. |
